2-1-1 Helpline Launches Teen Helpline in May
Posted on 5/13/2010

2-1-1 Helpline is a free and confidential information and referral service that provides easy access to current information about human services available in the Southern Tier of NYS. On May 14th, the new Teen Helpline will be launched in conjunction with the Adolescent Health and Wellness Conference being held at the Corning Radisson from 8:30-3:30pm. The site will be accessible via direct link at 211helpline.org. Teen Helpline is designed to provide the information and resources related to teen topics in a way that young people would find accessible. The site incorporates online chat as a means of contacting 2-1-1 Helpline to discuss information found on the site or as an opportunity to find additional resources. The site will offer specific pages for college options, smoking cessation and substance abuse. A parent page is also available for parents of teens or teen parents. “The concept of Teen Helpline developed from the increasing use of social media as means of communication within the teen generation, and the need for non-profit agencies to utilize these tools to ensure their message is being conveyed and to reach out effectively to this population,” said Kelli Mannon, Steuben Rural Health Network director. “We felt it was very important to provide another avenue for younger people to find the help they may need to deal with life problems. By adding online chat and a site geared to teens, we are building on the 2-1-1 service we offer to the region,” said Carol Wood, 2-1-1 Helpline director. 2-1-1 Teen Helpline was developed by IHS in collaboration with Steuben Rural Health Network, Steuben Department of Mental Health, Steuben Pregnancy Prevention Task Force, and Steuben Council on Addictions.

2-1-1 Helpline is a free and confidential information and referral service that connects individuals with resources and volunteer opportunities in our community. 2-1-1 Helpline directs those in need to hundreds of local human service agencies, government programs, and self-help and support groups. Callers speak directly with our information and referral specialists Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, with crisis referral 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. Dial 2-1-1 or search www.211helpline.org.

Building Public Will and Effective Coalitions for Teen Pregnancy Prevention – Advocates for Youth

Presenter:  Tom Klaus, Director of Capacity Building & Sustainability, Advocates for Youth, Washington, D.C.

Description:  For teen pregnancy prevention efforts to be effective in any community there has to be a community consensus that:

a) Teen pregnancy is a problem in and to the community;

b) There are effective initiatives that can successfully minimize the risk of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection; and

c) It is important to implement those most effective and appropriate initiatives, even if there isn’t complete agreement on specific activities within the initiative.

Most importantly, there needs to be strong public will to do what is best for the health and well-being of young people.  These are no easy tasks.  This workshop will examine ways that this consensus can be facilitated and public will can be grown.

Objectives:

As a result of participating in this workshop, participants will:

  1. Learn how to more effectively interpret the need for teen pregnancy prevention to community stakeholders;
  2. Learn the keys to reducing community angst and public controversy around the adoption and implementation of science-based approaches and programs to prevent teen pregnancy;
  3. Learn how to grow public will to address teen pregnancy;
  4. Learn how to facilitate critical community coalitions to create and enact action plans to address teen pregnancy
