Steuben Rural Health Network

CORNING-- The Steuben Teen Pregnancy Prevention Task Force will host an “Adolescent Health and Wellness Conference” at the Corning Radisson on Friday May 14^th from 8:30-3:30pm. The conference is held for educators, health and human service workers, and parents alike.

Conference topics include training and certification in the “BodyWorks” adolescent fitness and nutrition evidence-based program, taught by Kelli Mannon from the Steuben Rural Health Network. Innovative teaching methods for sex education will be presented by Tammy Miller, Director of Education at the Southern Finger Lakes Planned Parenthood. Julie Charlanow from the Steuben County Community Services will discuss alcohol and substance abuse in teens. Janis Whitlock, from the Cornell Research Program on Self-Injurious Teens, will present about self-injury and adolescents. Anika Allegra, from AIDS Care, will discuss Lesbian/Gay/Bi-Sexual/Transgender and Intersex Health Issues amongst adolescents. The Teen Parent panel, organized by Pro Action of Steuben and Yates, will also present issues of sexuality and parenthood from teens’ perspectives.

Time: October 20, 2010 at 8:30:00 AM Location: Hornell Golf Club Description: Annual Meeting & Professional Development Workshop Wednesday, October 20, 2010 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Hornell Golf Club, Hornell, New York Building Public Will and Effective Coalitions for Teen Pregnancy Prevention – Advocates for Youth Presenter: Tom Klaus, Director of Capacity Building & Sustainability, Advocates for Youth, Washington, D.C. Description: For teen pregnancy prevention efforts to be effective in any community there has to be a community consensus that: a) Teen pregnancy is a problem in and to the community; b) There are effective initiatives that can successfully minimize the risk of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection; and c) It is important to implement those most effective and appropriate initiatives, even if there isn’t complete agreement on specific activities within the initiative. Most importantly, there needs to be strong public will to do what is best for the health and well-being of young people. These are no easy tasks. This workshop will examine ways that this consensus can be facilitated and public will can be grown. *Objectives:* As a result of participating in this workshop, participants will: Learn how to more effectively interpret the need for teen pregnancy prevention to community stakeholders; Learn the keys to reducing community angst and public controversy around the adoption and implementation of science-based approaches and programs to prevent teen pregnancy; Learn how to grow public will to address teen pregnancy; Learn how to facilitate critical community coalitions to create and enact action plans to address teen pregnancy *Early Bird Discount: $35 (must be postmarked by 9/17/10)* *Registration after September 17^th: $45* *Registration form attached.
